Basel Action Network, which has been using GPS trackers to follow used electronics, today named six companies it says were involved in shipping scrap printers and LCD monitors to Asia.
The Seattle-based advocacy group today released an update to its “e-Trash Transparency Project,” which plants tracking devices in scrap electronics, drops them off for recycling and reports on where they’re sent.
Basel Action Network (BAN) identified the following six companies as being involved in “chains of export,” meaning they at some point handled a device that was eventually exported: ARC Broward IT Asset Recovery, Advanced Technology Recycling (ATR), Allied Ecovery, E-Tech Management, RAKI Electronics Recycling, and Secure Environmental Electronics Recycling (SEER).
Sixty tracked devices were dropped off for recycling in Florida, Georgia and Texas in July 2017. Of those, six total ended up in Hong Kong, Pakistan and the Philippines.
Thursday’s release was the second update of the “e-Trash Transparency Project,” which began in 2016. The first update was released last September. One company mentioned in September’s update, CompuCycle, was again covered in the latest report because a printer it had been involved with sending from Texas to Hong Kong was later shipped to Pakistan.
