A new blueprint from the Composting Consortium aims to guide municipalities in establishing and scaling composting infrastructure and organics management programs.

The publication, “How Organics Diversion Can Help Achieve Zero Waste Goals: A Blueprint for Action,” is intended to help municipalities develop food scrap collection programs and work with composters to meet zero waste and climate goals, according to a press release.

The consortium, a collaboration managed by the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners that launched in 2021, co-wrote the blueprint with Eco-Cycle, based in Boulder, Colorado.

The blueprint includes a section on policy and program expansion for diverting food waste, one for setting up organics programs and infrastructure, and a toolkit for communicating with program participants on topics such as proper sorting techniques.

In addition to the blueprint, the Consortium also launched two free platforms to support municipalities and composters in scaling organics infrastructure – the Composter Innovator Program and the Municipal Partner Platform.
