A new initiative by the primary US producer responsibility organization (PRO) aims to include producers’ voices in developing fees for emerging extended producer responsibility (EPR) laws for packaging.
Circular Action Alliance (CAA) is launching a fee-setting consultation and establishing a steering committee, as a structured way for producers to help inform the development of EPR fees across states. The PRO administers packaging EPR programs in states including California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado and others.
The steering committee will help CAA shape its producer consultation, by providing feedback on proposals for developing a fair, data-driven methodology for assessing fees. CAA will retain final decision-making authority on program updates.
CAA is accepting applications for the group through June 26, and aims to form a balanced, representative committee of various producer sizes, sectors and materials, with industry experience in multiple states.
A key tenet of the group will be confidentiality, to support open, productive dialogue, CAA said in a statement.
“The process is designed to deliver a fair, transparent and data-driven approach, harmonized across states and grounded in real-world experience,” CAA said in a statement.
