The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) announced Tuesday that CEO and Executive Director Amy Lestition Burke will leave the organization.
This closes out a three-year tenure that began in November 2023. Burke’s departure comes after a period the association credits with rebuilding its membership base and expanding its national profile.
During her tenure, SWANA launched RCon, a flagship conference built by and for members. She also forged partnerships intended to elevate the industry’s standing and traveled extensively to chapters across North America, according to the organization.
SWANA’s Board of Directors said it will now conduct a national search for the organization’s next CEO, with a goal of naming a successor by the end of the year.
Carolyn Muller, vice president of industry engagement, will serve as acting CEO.
The board stated it is looking for a leader who can carry forward SWANA’s strategic plan, which centers on four priorities: safety, sustainability, professional development and member value.
