Wide world of e-scrap: Aug. 17, 2016

A group in India isn’t happy with the government’s lack of e-scrap laws, and an Australian telecom company touts its e-scrap recycling rate.

India: A committee in India’s Parliament is pushing government leaders to adopt strict e-scrap laws, says Shanghai Metals Market. The committee says the country’s current rules do not cover proper disposal techniques, which could be causing harm to the environment and people.

Europe: A consortium of electronics manufacturers and recycling companies are unhappy with Europe’s proposed recycling rate calculation. Recycling International reports the group doesn’t think the proposal provides an accurate calculation method, therefore discouraging quality recycling methods.

Australia: Telecom company Telstra announced it collected more than 6,000 tons of e-scrap in fiscal year 2016. It notes 99 percent of that was recycled.
