Blancco Technology Group is expanding its role in IT asset disposition with the introduction of Blancco Blue, an AI-enabled platform designed to help ITAD providers and enterprise customers manage device processing and automate operational workflows.
Announced Wednesday, the platform unites Blancco’s established data erasure and diagnostics capabilities with a conversational AI assistant, Ask Blue, that allows users to retrieve operational information and create workflows using natural-language instructions.
Blue expands Blancco’s software offerings beyond its traditional focus on secure data sanitization. The company is positioning Blue as a broader management environment for IT asset lifecycle operations, where data generated during device processing can be used to guide subsequent activities.
The development introduces another approach to managing the information generated as equipment moves through testing, data erasure and disposition. It also places Blancco more directly in a software market in which specialized asset management systems already coordinate many of these activities.
Moving beyond erasure
Blancco has built its business around certified data erasure and device diagnostics, serving enterprise IT departments, ITAD companies and mobile device processors. Its software documents the sanitization of storage media, providing evidence that customer data has been removed before equipment is reused or resold.
Blancco Blue builds on those capabilities by introducing an AI-assisted management layer. According to the company, users can describe the workflow they want to establish through a conversation with Ask Blue, rather than relying upon conventional software configuration.
The company describes Blue as an agentic platform, a term generally associated with AI systems capable of performing tasks or initiating actions toward defined objectives.
Blancco’s announcement indicates that Ask Blue can help create and automate workflows, although the company has not specified the full extent of the assistant’s independent decision-making authority.
“Blancco Blue is where our platform starts working for our customers, not the other way around,” said Tzvika Shahaf, Blancco’s chief product and technology officer. “Customers can describe the outcome they want in plain English, and Ask Blue delivers the answer or builds the workflow to get there.”
The potential operational benefit lies in reducing the time required to configure processing activities and retrieve information from existing records. For facilities handling large volumes of equipment, these tasks can involve substantial administrative work alongside the physical processing of devices.
Turning erasure records into operational intelligence
A central element of Blancco’s announcement is the company’s accumulated history of more than 500 million certified erasures over about three decades.
Blancco says Blue draws upon this history to make information available through Ask Blue, allowing customers to query their audit records and obtain operational insights.
The integration of the company’s historical erasure data into the AI system could support performance benchmarking and broader analytical capabilities, potentially expanding the value of accumulated operational data for ITAD providers.
Erasure records contain information about devices and processing outcomes that may be useful beyond documenting successful sanitization. Analysis of those records could help operators identify recurring processing problems or examine performance across different equipment categories.
The availability of such functions, however, depends on the data accessible to the platform and the analytical capabilities Blancco makes available to customers.
Blue also introduces a new way for users to interact with information stored in Blancco’s systems. Through the Model Context Protocol, or MCP, Ask Blue can connect with external AI tools including ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft Copilot.
According to Blancco, these connections allow customers to query audit histories, build dashboards and retrieve reports through AI tools they already use.
This approach could reduce the need to navigate separate software interfaces to assemble operational reports. It also raises questions about how access permissions and customer data protections are maintained when external AI environments interact with records associated with secure data destruction.
A broader software role in ITAD
Blancco Blue will serve as the management gateway for the company’s data erasure and diagnostics products, which are being organized under the Blancco Certify name.
The Certify portfolio covers mobile devices, computers and storage media, including HDDs, SSDs and NVMe drives. Blancco says its sanitization software supports more than 25 standards and guidelines, with digitally signed certificates providing records of completed erasure activities.
Bringing these products under a common management platform gives Blancco an opportunity to extend its involvement in the operational processes surrounding data sanitization.
ITAD companies typically rely on software to maintain asset records and document processing activities. Those systems may also manage inventory movements and the subsequent disposition of equipment.
Blancco Blue enters this environment with an established position in data erasure, an activity that is central to the reuse of data-bearing IT assets. Its integration capabilities will be particularly relevant for operators that already have asset management software in place. Blancco says customers can use Ask Blue to pull reports from multiple sources across their operations, although the announcement does not identify the full range of supported third-party systems.
The degree to which Blue can coordinate activities beyond Blancco’s existing products will help determine its role within ITAD facilities.
Implications for hardware reuse
The launch also reflects the increasing importance of software in determining how efficiently used IT equipment can be processed for a second life.
Data sanitization is a necessary step in preparing many devices for reuse. Delays in erasure, diagnostics or the documentation of processing results can affect how quickly equipment becomes available for resale.
Blancco is presenting Blue as a means of reducing administrative work and accelerating processing, allowing operators to devote more attention to value recovery.
“Blancco Blue builds on three decades of expertise in data sanitization and device diagnostics to help customers make better decisions, operate more efficiently and mitigate risk,” said CEO Lou DiFruscio.
The commercial significance of Blancco Blue will depend on how effectively it works with established asset management systems and whether its AI functions produce measurable improvements in daily operations.
The introduction nevertheless signals a broader direction for Blancco. Data erasure remains the foundation of its offering, but the company seeks a larger role in the software environment through which IT assets are processed and prepared for reuse.
