Examining the trends that pushed and pulled on the industry over the past year can help provide insight into the 12 months yet to come.

Below are our 10 most-read stories from 2022 (organized in descending order, with the most-read article in the No. 1 position at the bottom). The list reflects just how varied our readers’ interests have become, with a number of stories concerning the ITAD, e-scrap dismantling/shredding and metals smelting/refining sectors, as well as coverage of emerging and long-established metals-recovery technologies.

10 | DHL launches comprehensive asset management service
OCTOBER 26: International logistics company DHL is leveraging its 1,200 worldwide sites to bring electronics resale, refurbishment and recycling services to the 140 countries it operates in.

9 | Japanese metals giant buys Canadian e-scrap processor
AUGUST 4: Japanese company JX Nippon Mining and Metals has purchased one of Canada’s largest e-scrap companies, eCycle Solutions. It’s the second example in the past month of an Asian smelting giant acquiring North American e-scrap operations to ensure a steady supply of feedstock.

8 | Treaty tightens regulations on global e-scrap trade
JUNE 16: Basel Convention changes approved this week may drastically reduce – or at least complicate – U.S. exports of non-hazardous e-scrap.

7 | T-Mobile sues Belmont Trading for over $6 million
OCTOBER 19: One of the largest wireless carriers in the country filed suit against its phone resale and recycling vendor, claiming it has been shortchanged $6.6 million.

6 | Morgan Stanley pays millions more in wake of ITAD mishaps
OCTOBER 12: Morgan Stanley’s years of IT asset disposition errors have cost the banking giant over $163 million, according to an updated E-Scrap News tally. New details on the data loss incidents have also recently come to light.

5 | European firms invest in Midwest e-scrap recycling companies
MAY 5: A newly formed company bought a large tract of Indiana land to build an e-scrap metals refining facility, and Totall Metal Recycling was acquired by a global copper supplier.

4 | Ranking of ITAD vendor reputations released
JUNE 3: All Green Electronics Recycling, Cascade Asset Management and ERI scored the top three spots on a recent ITAD vendor reputation rating by Compliance Standards.

3 | Li-Cycle investigated by law firms for accounting methods
MARCH 31: Publicly traded battery recycling company Li-Cycle has been accused by a short seller of “Enron-like accounting” methods.

2 | Acquisition deepens Korea Zinc’s presence in US
JULY 11: Metals giant Korea Zinc is set to control e-scrap recycling and secondary processing operations in the U.S. and Europe, striking a $332 million deal to acquire a majority stake in Igneo Technologies.

1 | Apple lays out details on its latest recycling automation
APRIL 20: Apple added to its recycling technology in 2021, upgrading some robots and rolling out a machine that can recover rare earth magnets that are typically destroyed in the shredding process.
