An industry group will recognize and promote recycling facilities that take steps to clean up the glass they move downstream.
The Glass Recycling Coalition launched a MRF Glass Certification Program to entice facilities to install glass cleanup equipment and implement procedures to produce higher quality material.
“The long-term goal is to encourage and produce quality glass products that are viable in the glass container market or other beneficial reuse applications and not in a landfill,” Tom Outerbridge of Sims Municipal Recycling stated in a press release. Sims is a member of the glass group.
According to a 2018 industry survey, 27% of MRFs have glass cleanup equipment.
Participants in the free certification program will be listed on the Glass Recycling Coalition’s online map and will receive traditional and social media recognition for their efforts.
The Glass Recycling Coalition was founded in 2016 by the Glass Packaging Institute (GPI), spirits maker Diageo and brewer New Belgium in collaboration with more than a dozen founding member companies. The group now has almost 40 companies in its membership.
Earlier this year, glass stakeholders launched the Glass Recycling Foundation, which works closely with the Glass Recycling Coalition.
