A Vermont materials recovery facility shuts down, and Ikea announces efforts to boost its already high recycling rate.

MRF shutdown: The Windham Solid Waste Management District in Brattleboro, Vt. voted to discontinue its hauling services and shut down its materials recovery facility (MRF), according to the Brattleboro Reformer. The district serves 19 towns.

Sustainable shopping: Swedish retail giant Ikea has achieved an 88.7 percent combined energy recovery and recycling rate, according to its 2016 sustainability report. It plans to install more than 150 balers at various locations across the world to make recycling more efficient. Waste reduction is the company’s next big project.

Collection sites: The City of Paris will be installing hundreds of public recycling stations by the year 2018, says CIWM. The stations will be similar to ones already found in apartment buildings. Those stations get full very quickly, forcing residents to throw recyclable materials in the trash.

Trash fire: A large fire at a Maryland trash incinerator is delaying solid waste deliveries, reports the Washington Post. An 85-foot high pile of trash caught fire last week.
