Sunnking reports 5% increase in recycling

Sunnking reports 5% increase in recycling

Processor Sunnking Sustainable Solutions collected more than 24 million pounds of electronics in 2024 and recycled 5% more e-scrap than the prior year, according to its recently released sustainability report.

The report outlines the New York-based company’s advancements in maximizing recycling processing capacity and reducing carbon emissions on both ends of its e-scrap reselling operations in 2024. According to the report, Sunnking collected 24.5 million pounds of electronics and recovered 97% of that weight for recycling, landfilling just 700,000 pounds. That’s half the amount landfilled in 2023.

“Achieving a 97% diversion rate is a proud milestone that reflects the commitment of our entire team, from the loading dock to leadership,” Director of Sustainability and Compliance Kali Smith said in the report. “We didn’t just improve our numbers; we reshaped how we think about waste.”

Last year, Sunnking installed a used four-shaft shredder, doubling its shredding rate to meet rising demand. The upgraded shredder can handle larger items, such as TVs and transformers, and requires 6% less energy per pound of material shredded, according to a press release. The company also invested in a foam densifier, which has already diverted 45,000 pounds of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam from landfills.

Sunnking has over 120 collection sites and does regular collection events across New York, especially in communities with limited e-scrap collection access. In 2024, Sunnking’s collection events recovered just under 1.4 million pounds of e-scrap.

Sunnking wiped 11,800 terabytes of data in 2024, a 128% increase from 2023. This rapid growth in data wiping services comes as the company rebranded to the full name of Sunnking Sustainable Solutions to highlight services outside of recycling and resale.

The report also notes the success of Sunnking’s newly launched ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) Reporting Tool, which allows clients to track the carbon emissions they prevented by recycling.

The report reaffirmed Sunnking’s commitment to aligning with the UN’s sustainability goals and to become carbon neutral by 2030. The company also plans to seek zero waste certification and participate in community outreach to improve public knowledge of e-scrap in the next three to five years.

“From recovering metals to harvesting parts for reuse, our mission remains clear: close the loop and support more sustainable tech ecosystems,” Sunnking noted in the report. “Circularity isn’t just a goal, it’s a system, a process and a principle we refine every day.”

Sunnking saw a 6% decrease in carbon emissions in 2024 between its ITAD facilities, manufacturing and collection transportation. The report also states Sunnking sold over 111,000 used devices, potentially preventing over 70,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent from being released.
