A Canadian packaging firm will expand with a paper machine producing 400,000 tons per year of containerboard and other corrugated products.

Atlantic Packaging on Oct. 15 announced it will install the 100% recycled paper machine at its Whitby, Ontario mill. The equipment will be installed adjacent to an existing recycled paper machine that has been in operation since the 1990s, the company stated.

“The new machine will be one of the most technologically advanced machines in North America, producing 400,000 tons per annum of high performance lightweight medium and liner,” the company wrote.

Atlantic published a brochure detailing its corrugated products made from recycled fiber, a line of materials the company calls SmartCorr. According to the company, the SmartCorr products have typically been produced using OCC. However, a company spokesperson told Resource Recycling the new machine will use both OCC and mixed paper. This sourcing plan is “part of our growth strategy in containerboard and in corrugated packaging,” the spokesperson noted.

The new machine is scheduled to start up in the first quarter of 2022, according to Atlantic Packaging. The press release did not disclose an investment figure.

According to its website, Atlantic Packaging operates an additional recycled paper mill in Scarborough, Ontario.
