Glass processing upgrades coming to sortation facilities in Quebec

Five sorting centers in Quebec, Canada have been selected to take part in a pilot project that organizers hope will lead to the recycling of all curbside glass.

The pilot is part of Éco Entreprises Québec’s (ÉEQ) Innovative Glass Works Plan. Each facility will receive glass separation and clean-up systems from Krysteline Technologies. In all, the investment totals $4.1 million ($5.6 million Canadian).

According to a press release from ÉEQ, which manages the Canadian province’s extended producer responsibility program for packaging, 18 sorting centers applied to participate in the pilot project and five were selected. Officials say the sorting centers are representative of the entire province and process 25 percent of of all glass collected at the curb in Quebec.

The equipment will be installed early next year.

Earlier this year, EEQ provided more than $800,000 to businesses with an interest in developing and marketing products made with recycled curbside glass.
