CalRecycle withdraws proposed regs for SB 54

News on the sudden withdrawal of California’s proposed recycling regulations, California recycling data, another RPET closure, EU support for recyclers, and facility fires were the biggest news in January. Catch up on these stories below:

1 | New brand-led recycling group looks to work with Congress

Led by the Consumer Brands Association, the Recycling Leadership Council includes several recycling, packaging, manufacturing and consumer product groups.

2 | US Plastics Pact announces leadership change

Crystal Bayliss will serve as interim executive director, the group’s board of directors said in a statement.

3 | Alpek closing Pennsylvania RPET plant

The world’s biggest PET producer said in a state WARN notice the plant would close March 15, and APR chief Steve Alexander warned that without swift action, more closures are to come.

4 | EU Commission fast-tracks support for plastics recyclers

The European Commission acknowledged the urgency for EU-wide measures to protect trade from cheap imports and to provide regulatory certainty to enable investment in chemical recycling.

5 | HDPE, PP bales firm as paper stays level

US prices for plastic film bales continued to weaken in January, while HDPE grades firmed and PET, paper and UBCs stayed flat.
