Three Canadian industry groups are collaborating to build a database of flexible packaging types, formats and composition, organized by product category, with a goal of informing better packaging design and recycling processes for flexibles.
The Circular Plastics Taskforce (CPT), Éco Entreprises Québec (EEQ) and Recycle BC are creating BiblioFlex to combine technical data with industry insights into market applications, following recommendations from a December 2023 report from the PRFlex initiative that said flexibles represented nearly half of plastic packaging in Canada.
BiblioFlex will feature two regional hubs, in Quebec and British Columbia and composition analysis is expected to begin by the end of this year, with the first project results expected next summer. More details will be available in early 2026 on the BiblioFlex website.
“With the expansion of expanded producer responsibility (EPR) across Canada, collection programs have started accepting a wider range of flexible plastic packaging,” said Normand Gadoury, vice president of innovation and infrastructure projects at EEQ. “Better understanding the specific composition of that stream is therefore more relevant than ever.”
CPT is an industry group consisting of paper packaging company Cascades, the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada, Danone Canada, Keurig Dr Pepper Canada, ProAmpac and producer responsibility organizations Circular Materials, EEQ and Recycle BC.
