News from Strategic Materials, Vecoplan and more

Coca-Cola Co. announced a goal to increase the share of its beverages delivered in returnable/refillable containers to 25% by 2030, up from a current 16%. Activist shareholder group As You Sow said it was pleased, while Sam Pearse with the Story of Stuff Project said a voluntary target was insufficient. 

Crown Holdings announced goals to increase beverage can recycling rates in the U.S. to 70%  by 2030, 80% by 2040 and 90% by 2050 and maintain a rate of greater than 90% in Mexico and a rate of more than 97% in Brazil through 2030. 

Colorado nonprofit collector and MRF operator Eco-Cycle bought an electric organics collection truck, which will travel an estimated 15,000 miles each year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2,500 tons over the vehicle’s lifetime.

Republic Services announced a deal to acquire US Ecology in a $2.2 billion deal. 

MRF equipment manufacturer Sherbrooke OEM received a loan of 950,000 Canadian dollars (about $746,000) from the government to buy a fully automated digital laser-cutting system.

Glass beneficiation company Strategic Materials announced the appointment of Paul Garris as senior vice president and chief financial officer. 

Vecoplan opened an office and technology facility in Eastvale, Calif. called Vecoplan West. It will have sales and after-sales support offices, a distribution facility for spare and replacement parts and serve as a technology center for product trials. 

Atlanta-based WestRock announced plans to open a new corrugated box plant in Longview, Wash. to replace its current plant.
