Ineos launches R-PP grade for EU cosmetics packaging

Swiss-headquartered Ineos Olefins & Polymers Europe has added a new resin to its line of “hybrid” polyolefins that combine mechanically processed PCR with highly engineered virgin polymers.

The new Recycl-IN natural color PP resin (rPP1025C) contains 70% recycled material, and is targeted for applications in cosmetics packaging, such as screw closures, mascara containers and deodorant roller balls, according to a press release.

Combining “high levels of mechanically recycled plastic with advanced ‘booster’ polymers,” the resin allows for use in stiff, pigmented or translucent components via injection molding or fiber extrusion processes, as in nonwovens. The recycled materials used in the resin received a No Objection Letter from the US Food and Drug Administration, though the newest resin is not intended for food contact applications, and the materials were certified as PCR by Europe’s RecyClass.

The company previously launched another recycled PP grade, rPP2030C, for use in applications including flip-top caps and cosmetic pump assemblies.

Despite its use of mechanically recycled polymers in the Recycl-IN product line, Ineos notes on its site that complementary chemical recycling processes – also referred to as advanced recycling – are necessary to meet the EU’s most stringent specifications: “Mechanically recycled polyolefins do not, in general, satisfy the strict regulatory requirements for use in demanding applications such as food contact packaging or medical devices.”

Last September, sister company Ineos Styrolution in Belgium received the first commercial-scale deliveries of recycled styrene monomer from Indaver’s depolymerization plant, the first of its kind in Europe. The monomer is used to make polystyrene.

And in June 2025, Ineos Olefins & Polymers Europe began using pyrolysis oil to make virgin-quality polymers at its facility at Lavera in France.
