The Coca-Cola Company will make all of its half-liter carbonated beverages in Canada out of 100% RPET by 2024, the company announced.
According to a press release, this will be the first time 500-milliliter sparkling beverages will be sold in 100% RPET bottles (excluding the cap and label) in Canada.
The bottles will be produced by Coke Canada Bottling at its plants in Brampton, Ontario; Calgary, Alberta; Lachine, Quebec; and Richmond, British Columbia.
“We’re on a journey to be the leading beverage partner in Canada, and one of the ways we’re doing that is by earning our social license to operate by driving a circular economy for our packaging,” Todd Parsons, CEO of Coca-Cola Canada Bottling Limited, stated in the release. “Every one of these 100% recycled plastic bottles represents meaningful progress on that journey.”
The Coca-Cola Company earlier this year announced 100% RPET bottles for some of its drinks in the Northeast U.S. Last year, the company announced it would eliminate its use of green PET, and it rolled out 100% RPET Dasani bottles in the U.S. and Canada.
The company’s goal is to use at least 50% recycled content in packaging by 2030, the release notes. Through its participation in the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, the company’s 2025 aim is to average 25% post-consumer content. According to the most recent report, the brand owner is at 15%.
