Virgin PP producer moves deeper into recycling

Braskem, the largest polyolefins producer in the Americas, is now selling into the U.S. market its first 100% recycled plastic pellets.

Braskem, a Brazil-headquartered virgin plastics giant, announced the release of “I’m green Recycled polypropylene.” The company is working to expand its “I’m green” product portfolio, which includes both bio-derived and post-consumer plastics, and the recycled PP is the first new product in the expansion. It’s Braskem’s first 100% post-consumer product.

Feedstock for the plastic is PP twine typically used for hay bales. The final product, black PP pellets, are suitable for use in compounding and packaging applications, including uses in automotive, housewares and consumer goods, according to a company press release.

Headquartered in Sao Paulo, Braskem produces over 20 million tons of plastic and chemical products each year. A U.S. subsidiary, Philadelphia-based Braskem America, has six virgin PP production plants across the U.S.
