As federal elected officials debate significant investments in the nation’s infrastructure, recycling and composting stakeholders are pushing them to steer some of that money into materials recovery.
The “Recycling Is Infrastructure Too” campaign is supported by the American Sustainable Business Council, Biodegradable Products Institute, Container Recycling Institute, GreenEducation.us, Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ISLR), National Recycling Coalition, South Baltimore Community Land Trust, Baltimore’s Zero Waste Coalition, US Composting Council (USCC), US Green Building Council-TRUE Program and Zero Waste USA.
The campaign’s goal is to promote increased investment in waste reduction, redesign, reuse, recycling and composting infrastructure, according to a press release.
“The Campaign will advocate for policies, funding, and other measures to expand these programs and services and increase the use of reuse systems, recycled content, and compost products in all infrastructure projects,” the release states.
The Recycling Partnership last week released a report estimating that $17 billion in spending for residential recycling could increase the national recycling rate to 70%.
