US Ecology, which recycles and disposes of electronics and their components, is slated for acquisition by the second-largest garbage and recycling hauler in North America.
Based in Phoenix, Republic Services on Feb. 9 announced the $2.2 billion purchase of US Ecology, which is headquartered in Boise.
Republic Services is the second-largest residential waste hauler on the continent, after Waste Management. The company owns or operates nearly 200 solid waste landfills, 73 recycling facilities and numerous other facilities across the U.S.
US Ecology provides treatment, recycling and disposal services for a range of hazardous, non-hazardous and specialty waste streams. Much of what the company handles has nothing to do with electronics, but it is involved with the recycling of electronics, batteries, bulbs and other materials.
Additionally, US Ecology, which operates five hazardous waste landfills, disposes of significant amounts of leaded CRT glass, including glass from California’s electronics recycling program and CRT materials abandoned in high-profile e-scrap company failures.
The boards of Republic Services and US Ecology, both publicly traded companies, have approved the sale. The deal is expected to close by the end of the second quarter, subject to approval by a majority of US Ecology’s common stock shareholders and regulatory approvals, according to a press release.
