A New York City borough fights back against illegal dumpers of old electronics, and Best Buy joins a national effort to promote recycling.
Best Buy wants to be recycled: Electronics giant Best Buy has joined the “I Want to be Recycled” campaign from national nonprofit group Keep America Beautiful. This holiday season, the retailer will feature packaging that encourages consumers to learn more about recycling in their area.
Illegal dumpers force change: A New York state landfill ban on e-scrap has caused an uptick in illegal dumping on New York City’s Staten Island, which in turn caused borough officials to start collecting e-scrap at state facilities. According to silive.com, Staten Island will also start a yearlong pilot program involving curbside pick-up of old electronics.
Legal battle over e-scrap: A Tennessee appeals court handed down a ruling recently siding with Clean Harbor Environmental Services in its legal battle with the state over the handling of e-scrap. Waste 360 says the court agreed that Clean Harbor didn’t violate its contract with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
