The Recycling Partnership’s Center for Sustainable Behavior and Impact recently released an in-depth study on decreasing consumer confusion and spurring better recycling habits. The 2023 “Knowledge Report” was based on visits to 16 homes, over 100 in-depth interviews, 10,000 survey responses and seven community pilot projects.
The survey’s results show a clear need for more consistent and targeted information flowing to residents, with 75% of respondents saying they cannot recall receiving any communications in the past year. With only 47% saying they believe their recycled items are made into new products, the results also highlight a significant trust issue. And with only a small majority (61%) saying they have everything they need to recycle properly, the survey suggests more could be done to equip and inspire the public.
