kids recycle / AVAVA, ShutterstockWhile kids and teachers across the country are getting ready to go back to school, nonprofit organization Keep America Beautiful is launching its sixth-annual Recycle-Bowl.

Recycle-Bowl is a K-12 school-based recycling competition open to schools, teachers, administrators and even parent organizations. The goal is to engage and educate communities about recycling. Last year, nearly 700,000 students and teachers from more than 1,265 schools participated.

The big winner was Egg Harbor City Community School in Egg Harbor, N.J. Participating schools last year diverted a total of 3.9 million pounds of material.

Registration is open now and the competition culminates on Nov. 15, America Recycles Day. Businesses, government entities and community organizations are encouraged to participate by holding an event or activity that is focused on reminding people what can be recycled.

Keep America Beautiful is also encouraging people to think about recycling all year long with the #BeRecycled pledge. It’s a promise to reduce, reuse and recycle in all parts of daily life.
