European plastics recycling sector faces slew of challenges

Editor’s Note: This is the first in a monthly PCR resin pricing analysis contributed by commodity intelligence firm ICIS.

Globally, markets continue to work through demand and financial uncertainty related to U.S. tariff policy. As a result, most recycled plastics markets have seen orders drop in June as players function in wait-and-see mode.

Several U.S. recycled plastic bale markets experienced aggressive downward movement in recent weeks, which will be reflected in future flake and pellet prices. Meanwhile, there are still slight changes month on month; though, for some commodities, significant changes are seen year on year.

The June U.S.-wide average price for spot market post-consumer rPET flake destined for packaging end markets dropped 3% month on month, but is up 14% year on year.

The June U.S.-wide average price for spot market post-consumer, food grade rPET pellet is down 1% month on month, but improved 8% year on year.

Recent drops in PET bale feedstock costs, down by as much as 14% month on month, should be reflected in future flake and pellet pricing.

The June average price for U.S. spot market post-consumer, natural rHDPE pellet is down 4% month on month, but still up 65% year on year.

Recent drops in natural HDPE bale feedstock costs, as much as down 22% month on month, should be reflected in future pellet pricing.

The June average price for U.S. spot market post-consumer, mixed colored rHDPE pellet is down month on month.

The June average price for U.S. spot market post-consumer, natural rLDPE pellet is flat month on month.

The June average price for U.S. spot market post-consumer, natural rPP pellet is flat month on month.

The June average price for U.S. spot market post-consumer, black rPP pellet is flat month on month, after falling 14% the prior month on lower bale feedstock costs.

Pricing information comes from ICIS’s coverage of U.S. recycled plastics markets, including bale, flake and pellet information across rPET, rPE and rPP. Prices shared above exclude transportation costs and “U.S.-wide” averages take into consideration individual U.S. East Coast and U.S. West Coast prices provided by ICIS.
