Projects to recover health-care plastics are highlighted, and greater volumes of packaging for ready-to-eat foods are likely to enter the recycling stream.

Plastics recycling innovation: The Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council recently held its fall meeting and the theme was innovative ways to recycle plastics found in the healthcare industry. As an example of one effort, Goodwill of Southern California stepped up to separate materials, something processors don’t often want to do and hospitals don’t have the time to do.

On the go: The ready-to-eat foods market is expected to grow significantly over the next 10 years, according to a report by Future Market Insights. This has implications for the kinds of food packaging materials recovery facilities (MRFs) are likely to see in the future.

Recovered packaging prices: With one exception, the value of recovered packaging in the U.S. at the start of November is essentially on par with the prices paid the previous month. Plastics packaging at the start of November are up or down by a half-cent per pound, according to the grade.
