WM, the nation’s largest hauler, opened a nearly 200,000 ton/year MRF in Indianapolis, with some OCC and all mixed paper going to Pratt Industries for use in 100% recycled packaging.
In addition, Pratt can accept paper cups in mixed paper bales and supports collection of them in City of Indianapolis curbside services, said Shawn State, president of Pratt Recycling.
The new WM facility includes glass recovery equipment, optical sorters, non-wrapping screens to minimize downtime from plastic film, and ballistic separators.
Andrew Berger, president and CEO of the Indiana Manufacturers Association, said, “This facility does more than just process waste; it strengthens our supply chain resilience and helps Indiana companies meet the growing global demand for sustainable production.”
WM pledged to invest more than $1.4 billion over five years in 39 new and upgraded recycling facilities across North America, adding approximately 2.8 million tons of incremental annual processing capacity. So far this year the company has brought online MRFs in California, Florida and Ontario, among others.
“WM continues its investment in recycling infrastructure with the opening of our new state-of-the-art Indianapolis Recycling Facility,” said Frank Fello, area vice president, WM Great Lakes. “Our team is proud to provide a local solution for cutting-edge single-stream recycling in Central Indiana, as we work with our communities to support the development of a circular economy in the state, fostered by impactful and meaningful education programs to recycle right.”
