Dow recently inked agreements to boost plastics recovery in Europe and Southeast Asia, including through the use of chemical recycling technologies.
The Midland, Mich.-headquartered chemical and plastics producer signed an off-take agreement with Dutch company Fuenix Ecogy Group, which uses a pyrolysis technology to recycle scrap plastics. Dow will purchase Fuenix’s pyrolysis oil and process it into new polymers at Dow’s Terneuzen, Netherlands plant.
Fuenix says it has a unique technology to process mixed plastics into naphtha, paraffin and liquified petroleum gas, while generating fewer carbon dioxide emissions than alternative recycling methods.
Additionally, Dow signed a collaboration agreement with Thai virgin plastics producer SCG to “develop new complete recycling solutions to add value to plastic waste and prevent them from ending up in the environment.”
According to a press release, the end products of the SCG partnership will include plastics produced through mechanical recycling and petrochemical feedstocks produced through chemical recycling processes. The plastics they’ll recycle include multi-layer packaging and contaminated plastic scrap.
