The codes the government uses to identify industries can be confusing for companies to navigate. The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) has published a white paper providing guidance on the codes specific to the waste and recycling industries.
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is used for reporting purposes by government agencies such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The data compiled by the government using these codes can also be helpful to businesses in the industry.
NWRA has identified more than a dozen codes that are applicable to recycling and waste businesses and their ancillary operations, including landfill operators, hazardous waste disposal facilities and even corporate offices. NWRA hopes the white paper will make it easier for companies to select the right codes, creating a more accurate picture of the industry.
