Nexus Circular plans to build a pyrolysis plant in the Chicago area, and polyolefins producer Braskem has signed an agreement to buy the facility’s output.
Nexus Circular (formerly Nexus Fuels) is an Atlanta-based chemical recycling company that, for years, has used its proprietary technology to break down plastics into pyrolysis oil, which it sells to plastics producers to make new plastic.
In January, Braskem, the largest polyolefins producer in the Americas and the biggest PP producer in the U.S., made an investment to obtain a non-controlling interest in Nexus.
Now, Braskem has announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Nexus to buy the chemicals produced by a facility Nexus is planning near Chicago. The release states the plant will have an initial annual capacity of 30,000 metric tons, with the potential to expand to over 120,000 metric tons. This MOU gives Braskem the exclusive right to buy the facility’s output, which will be used to produce PP.
