A major end user of recovered PE film has completed a multi-year $200 million investment by opening a new facility in Virginia. The expansion is part of a strategy to increase production capacity by 70%.

Winchester, Va.-based Trex this month announced the opening of a 200,000-square-foot manufacturing and support facility adjacent to its existing Virginia campus. In a release, company leaders described the opening as a “historic milestone” for the company.

Trex manufactures composite decking made primarily from recovered wood and plastic film.

The Virginia plant is part of a $200 million company investment to increase production capacity, announced in mid-2019. In addition to the Virginia facility, the investment included three new production lines at the company’s Nevada facility. Those came on-line earlier this year.

“Trex recognized the tremendous potential for growth across its entire decking portfolio and the need for expanded manufacturing capacity to meet projected demand,” the company stated.

Together, the Virginia and Nevada expansions are expected to increase the company’s production capacity by 70%, according to the release.

Trex previously told Plastics Recycling Update that, prior to the growth, the company was recycling 800 million pounds of PE film, wood chips and sawdust annually. With the expansions, the company projected it would boost capacity to over 1.4 billion pounds.
