Some Canadian Tim Hortons customers will test fiber hot beverage lids in the coming weeks, an attempt by the coffee giant to replace plastic lids with something that will fit into the recycling stream.

According to a press release, select Tim Hortons locations in Ottawa and Gatineau will test the lids for up to six weeks “as part of our efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastics.”

“The goal of the trial is to work toward developing a guest-friendly alternative to plastic lids that are easier to compost or recycle,” the press release noted.

The lids are an improved version of lids that the company tested in Vancouver in early 2023 and in Prince Edward Island earlier this year.

Tim Hortons has also started introducing wooden and fiber cutlery and fiber lids on Loaded Bowls over the past year, also to reduce how many single-use plastics it distributes.

Paul Yang, senior director of procurement, sustainability and packaging for Tim Hortons, said in a written statement that the company has “worked hard on developing a fibre lid that feels like our current lids but is plastic-free.”

“These fibre lids are part of our five-year journey to develop more innovative solutions for all our packaging and we’re excited to have our guests in Ottawa join us in this test,” he added.
