EPR expands in Canada

Extended producer responsibility for electronics has made its way to Newfoundland and Labrador, with the provincial government recently amending its regulations to include producer-managed electronics recycling programs.

Newfoundland and Labrador join seven other Canadian provinces with electronics recycling programs. Manufacturers have 120 days to submit their stewardship plans to the province's Multi-Materials Stewardship Board, with covered products including televisions, desktop and laptop computers, monitors, computer peripherals, printers, A/V and stereo equipment, phones and fax machines, and handheld mobile electronics.

In addition to meeting collection and take-back targets, brand owners are responsible for providing retailers with a list of products covered, as well as educational and outreach materials for consumers on recycling options.
