Call2Recycle wants to take battery recycling helm in Ontario

Call2Recycle wants to helm Ontario's battery strategy

By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling

The Canadian arm of consumer battery collection program Call2Recycle is looking bolster its presence in Ontario.

The nonprofit group, which is funded by battery and electronics manufacturers, earlier this month submitted an industry stewardship plan to Ontario recycling officials in hopes of being approved to manage the province's battery diversion efforts. If given the go-ahead, the group would roll out a province-wide system for recycling both single-use and rechargeable products.

Call2Recycle Canada has gained government approval for similar management arrangements in British Columbia, Manitoba and Quebec. Its programs focus on educating residents about proper battery recycling protocol as well as developing streamlined networks of collection and processing sites.

Waste Diversion Ontario, the government body that will be considering the proposal, has scheduled a pair of public consultation webinars on the topic for this fall. One will be held Oct. 24, the other Nov. 4. Register for those events here.

Call2Recycle Canada, Inc. is subsidiary of Call2Recycle, Inc. which is based in the U.S.
