Canada expands ag-plastic collection

By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling

The Canadian agricultural plastic recycling program CleanFARMS is expanding to cover fertilizer containers.

In addition to pesticide containers and bags, bale and silage wrap, film and twine, the stewardship program now also accepts fertilizer jugs and pails under 23 liters, provided they are triple pressure-rinsed, and metal handles and caps are removed prior to collection. Containers larger than 23 liters can be returned to the point of sale. CleanFARMS includes a network of approximately 1,000 collection sites spread across eight provinces.

The expansion to include fertilizer containers was specifically cited as an area of growth in the organization's most recent annual report. Joining CleanFARMS is also a common method for pesticide, fertilizer and container manufacturers to comply with provincial mandatory producer responsibility plans.
