Overall shipments of recyclable fiber from U.S. baling facilities declined last year. On the domestic front, the American Forest & Paper Association reports that the industry consumption of recovered paper fell 3 percent in 2012. At the same time, U.S. exports of recyclable paper and paperboard dipped last year by nearly 5 percent to about 22 million tons.

Eugene, Oregon-based Bulk Handling Systems has acquired Nihot Recycling Technology BV, an Amsterdam-based company that designs and manufactures air sorting and separation equipment for the solid waste and recycling industries.

A state agency in North Carolina has launched a new campaign to encourage restaurants and individuals to recycle oyster shells instead of tossing them out, reports The News & Observer. The shells, which are banned from landfills in the state, are collected through the program and used to create habitats for oysters.

The EPS Industry Alliance, a group that seeks to help consumer recycle expanded polystyrene, has introduced a new tool on its website that helps consumers and businesses locate a facility where they can drop off the material. The EPS Reuse and Recycling Map uses a Google map that is designed to be intuitive and easy to use.
