1 | RR Conference 2011 knocks one out of the park

Over 500 recycling professionals from the U.S., Canada and around the world met, networked and learned last week at the second annual Resource Recycling Conference at the world-class JW Marriott hotel in downtown Indianapolis.

From the passionate opening session which saw a vibrant debate between Nestl Waters North America's Michael Washburn, and John Shanahan of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, on recycling's most pressing issue — extended producer responsibility, to an animated look into the unsure future of paper markets with Sylvain-Yves Longval of Abitibi-Bowater, Inc., Bill Moore of Moore & Associates and American Chung Nam Group's Wade Schuetzeberg.

"Real debate without rancor," said one conference attendee, "that's something that I've never seen at a conference."

Many other notable sessions were held, from a fascinating look at MIT's SENSEable City Lab tracking thousands of recyclables from households in Seattle to the second annual lightning session with recycling experts from around the country holding forth on topics as varied as the best management practices in food scrap recovery to seeing what the net effect recycling has on job creation.

Save the date for the next Resource Recycling Conference to be held August 28-29, 2012 in Austin, Texas!

3 | ESC 2011: The need for rare earth metals recovery

Many of the 17 rare earth metals mined in the world eventually end up in electronics. Serious geopolitical concerns have resulted in a steep increase in the value of these metals and an ensuing tightness in supply, with many key leaders calling for increased rare earth metal recycling. But can they be recycled? Who's doing it now? What's the future? Research is underway to answer these and other key questions.

Don't miss this year's E-Scrap Conference, which will be held October 5-6 at the Omni Championsgate in Orlando, Florida. For more information, visit www.e-scrapconference.com, or click the banner below.
