2 | Have an idea to engage residents? Here's your shot at funding

Community engagement is one of recycling's most persistent challenges. From small collection depots to state-of-the-art MRFs, the quality and volume of recyclable materials depends on the everyday choices made by individual consumers.

This is just one of the areas in which creative minds in the recycling industry think there is room for improvement. Don't let your great idea get lost in the shuffle. Apply today to the 2014 Recycling Innovators Forum for a chance to get your concept in front of the industry's biggest decision-makers and possibly win $20,000 in funding.

The deadline for Forum submissions has been extended to May 30, meaning there's still time to write up and enter your short proposal.

The second annual Recycling Innovators Forum is sponsored by Alcoa, the American Chemistry Council, Coca-Cola Recycling, Resource Recycling (the parent company of this publication) and Waste Management. The competition will be held on Sept. 15, the day before the start of the annual Resource Recycling Conference in New Orleans, and will award two $20,000 prizes: one to the top idea submitted by an individual or small group of entrepreneurs and another to the top proposal from an established company or organization.

For more information about competing in, or attending, this free event, visit recyclinginnovators.com.

6 | Resource Recycling Conference 2014: Heading to the Big Easy

Mark your calendars for September, when the industry's premier high-level gathering will take place in one of America's premier cities. The Resource Recycling Conference is heading to New Orleans, the historic hotbed of culture and cuisine at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

Resource Recycling Conference 2014 will give you the chance to learn from and network with leaders from stakeholders representing every part of the materials recovery stream. And when the day's work is through you'll be steps away from the brass bands, gumbo joints and centuries-old neighborhoods that define the charm and character of the Crescent City.

Resource Recycling Conference 2014 is taking place at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Sept. 15-17. Head to rrconference.com for more information on attending, sponsoring and exhibiting. And be sure to plan your trip to include the numerous industry trade associations holding meetings before, during and after the conference itself. More information on those events will be coming soon.
