1 | Curbside Value Partnership forms nonprofit, splits from KAB


Curbside Value Partnership (CVP) recently announced that it will become an independent organization, splitting from Keep America Beautiful, where the organization operated as a KAB program for the last two years. Longtime director of CVP, Steve Thompson, was named executive director of the now-independent nonprofit organization. The group's board of directors is comprised of representatives from Alcoa, ARCO Aluminum Inc., Ball Corporation, Coca-Cola Recycling, Keep America Beautiful and Novelis.

3 | RecycleMania launches 2011 campaign


As colleges and universities ramp up for the NCAA basketball tournament, a number of them are also preparing for another parallel competition. RecycleMania pits college campuses across the country against each other to see which can out reduce, reuse and recycle other competing schools during an eight-week period beginning in February and running alongside the NCAA basketball tournament.

4 | Recycling in the movies


The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP) is accepting submissions for its fourth annual Recycling Film Festival. To be held in Erie on July 25 in conjunction with PROP's annual recycling conference, schools, colleges, local governments and other institutions or individuals in the recycling industry are encouraged to submit a short video on any recycling or waste reduction topic.

5 | American Metal Market uncovers UCB fraud


California's beverage deposit container system is being severely undermined and could be headed toward bankruptcy by shady interstate operations that are illegally cashing in on aluminum empties from Arizona residents, according to a series of articles published in American Metal Market. Through interviews with state officials and businesses that legitimately collect and redeem the material, as well as onsite reporting, the trade journal has found a burgeoning number of underground entrepreneurs that aggressively seek aluminum cans from Arizona, which lacks a beverage deposit container system, by offering higher prices for the material than legitimate businesses. The cans collected by the illicit traders are then cashed in under the Golden State's return system, reports AMM.

6 | The state of business is green


GreenBiz Group, a media company focused on sustainable business, has released its "State of Green Business Report," which finds that large corporations are becoming increasingly environmentally minded, and are making strides in increasing recycling and using recycled materials.

7 | England hits 40 percent recycling rate


England has reached an environmental milestone. The Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has released numbers showing that, for the first time, the country either recycled or composted 40 percent of its household waste. The numbers are based on data submitted by local authorities in England on the amount of waste they collected and managed for the financial year encompassing July 2009 through June 2010.
