Markets for many recovered materials moved higher in the first weeks of the new year. Industry analysts note that global economic conditions are slowly improving. At the same time, poor weather in North America forced many domestic consumers to scramble for sufficient supplies of recyclable commodities.

3 | Rechargeable battery collection up over 10 percent


Call2Recycle has seen its collection of rechargeable batteries rise by 10.1 percent in 2010 — new record volumes for the organization, which is operated by the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp. (RBRC). Using a network of 30,000 retail, municipal and business partners in the U.S. and Canada, Call2Recycle collected more than 6.7 million pounds of rechargeable batteries during 2010.

4 | Both Carolinas see recycling recovery


The recycling industry in North Carolina has fared relatively well despite the soggy economy, according to a new study by the state's Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Meanwhile, conservationists in its neighbor to the south are gearing up to push legislation that aims to divert more recyclables from landfills.

6 | Garden State hands out grants


New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection is awarding $13 million in grants to assist local governments in improving their recycling efforts. Municipal governments will receive 60 percent of the money, which comes from a $3-per-ton surcharge on trash disposed at solid waste facilities, and is to be used for outreach and compliance efforts.
