1 | California recalculates value of redeemed containers


California redemption centers and reverse vending machine operators will now see higher financial returns on collected material, thanks to an update to the state's calculation of the refund value per pound of redeemed containers, which went into effect March 1.

Prime polystyrene prices reached historically high levels in February and, as a result, end-users were eager to replace prime material with recycled material in their processes wherever possible.

4 | Exports declined five percent in December


The volume of plastic scrap exported in December, at 362.811 million pounds, was down 4.98 percent from its November figure. The volume also dropped when matched against its December 2010 position, with a 7.9 percent decrease in the volume of exports.
