2 | ESC 2011: Three major assessments to be offered

Each year the E-Scrap Conference highlights research into critical issues and trends affecting electronics recycling. This year the focus will be on three critical issues.

The aftermath in Japan. We will be assessing the impact of the tragic earthquake and resulting tsunami on the high-tech industry. This research will include an explanation of how the global electronics recycling industry has changed due to the ongoing economic and manufacturing problems in the third largest economy in the world.

The need for rare earth metals recovery. Many of the 17 rare earth metals mined in the world eventually end up in electronics. Serious geopolitical concerns have resulted in a steep increase in the value of these metals and an ensuing tightness in supply, with many key leaders calling for increased rare earth metal recycling. But can they be recycled? Whos doing it now? Whats the future? Research is underway to answer these and other key questions.

The cloud's effect on electronics recycling. More and more governments, businesses and consumers are taking their computing to the cloud. Huge IT players (Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Dell, IBM, etc.) are rushing to launch or expand cloud computing services whereby their software or massive data centers will provide for a clients computing needs. What will be the effect on e-scrap recycling and data security as computing moves to the cloud? Will this transform how the electronics recycling industry does its business? These are among the questions our researchers are addressing.

The E-Scrap Conference will be held this year in Orlando, Florida, October 5-6. For more information, including how to register, visit www.e-scrapconference.com, or click the banner below.

3 | ERCC releases best practices guide

However, the Electronics Recycling Coordination Clearinghouse (ERCC) has released a set of best practices that it hopes will be a useful tool to evaluate the successes and shortcomings of different e-scrap collection measures.
