1 | Rechargeable battery collection up over 10 percent


Call2Recycle has seen its collection of rechargeable batteries rise by 10.1 percent in 2010 and new record volumes for the organization, which is operated by the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp. (RBRC). Using a network of 30,000 retail, municipal and business partners in the U.S. and Canada, Call2Recycle collected more than 6.7 million pounds of rechargeable batteries during 2010.

2 | Best Buy expands buy-back program


Best Buy's recently announced buy-back program is aimed squarely at encouraging new purchases, but also offers new resale and recycling options as well. Under the program, consumers can trade in their old items for in-store or online credit. It covers five categories of goods: laptops, netbooks, tablets, post-paid mobile phones and televisions.

3 | WEEE reuse specs to reduce illegal exports


A new WEEE specification aimed squarely at stemming the volume of waste electronics to developing countries will be unveiled in early February. The new regulation would specifically apply to reuse and seek to weed out items classified as "fit for reuse" but are in fact irreparable or otherwise unusable. WEEE, or Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, is the European Union's definition of electronic scrap and includes computers, IT, display devices, appliances and other electronic items.

4 | E-Cycle Washington releases 2010 numbers


Washington State's E-Cycle program has released year-end figures for 2010, revealing that the Evergreen State's e-scrap collection efforts brought in 3.6 million pounds of covered electronic products in December and about 39.5 million pounds of materials for the year.

5 | Panasonic sets collection goals


Panasonic recently announced several new initiatives to green its manufacturing, supply-chain and business operations practices, including a new push for greater electronics recycling. In the three-year period through 2013, Panasonic has pledged to double its drop-off locations to 1,600 sites, and double the sales of both Energy Star-qualified products and EPEAT Silver and Gold-registered products.
