Russell was shot and killed by her estranged husband at her office in downtown Denver, as has been reported by the Denver Post and other Colorado media outlets.
Juri Freeman, CAFR’s president, wrote in a letter to the group’s members that Russell’s “enthusiasm, professionalism, and positive demeanor had quickly won her a number of fans within the organization, including myself.”
Russell began her tenure as the executive director of CAFR in April, and she had an extensive career in the nonprofit sector and in public service. She served as the mayor of Buena Vista, Colo. from 2006 to 2010.
A vigil at the Alliance Center, where CAFR’s office is located, was held June 30. The Cara Russell Memorial Fund was created shortly thereafter.
The fund will help to cover medical and funeral expenses. Leftover money will be donated to the Ark Valley Humane Society, Russell’s favorite charity.
