Polyolefins producer Braskem is bringing more post-consumer content to its portfolio.
Two new PCR PP grades from the company can be used in a range of food-contact applications including consumer packaging, caps and closures, housewares and different thermoforming applications, according to a press release.
Braskem’s thermoforming grade contains 25% post-consumer content and meets the requirements for certain FDA food-contact applications, including high-temperature packaging such as food retail and food service trays and coffee lids.
The new grade for caps and closures also contains 25% post-consumer content and meets FDA requirements for injection-molded caps and closures. That grade can also be used for health, hygiene and cosmetics products, the press release said.
Geoffrey Inch, Braskem North America sustainability director, called the two new PP grades “another milestone in Braskem’s journey to a carbon neutral circular economy.”
“Not only will Braskem’s new PCR polypropylene grades help our clients meet their commitments for recycled content in FDA food-contact markets, where PCR solutions are limited today, these developments will also keep us on track to reach our goals of providing 300,000 tons of thermoplastic resins and chemicals with recycled content by 2025 and one million tons of thermoplastic resins and chemicals with recycled content by 2030,” Inch said in the press release.
Braskem America is a founding member and funding partner of the Polypropylene Recycling Coalition, which works to increase U.S. PP recovery and reuse.
