South Carolina workers said to steal from the hand that feeds
By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling
A handful of Waste Management and Republic Services workers have been arrested in South Carolina for allegedly stealing metal containers from their employers and selling them to a recycling firm in the state.
Authorities say the seven individuals — three of whom worked for Republic and four at Waste Management — nabbed more than 40 containers from waste yards over the course of four months. They were sold to Simco Recycling Center in the town of Yemassee for a total of $19,000, police say.
Four of the suspects face charges that could land them in jail for up to five years if they are convicted. The three others face misdemeanor charges that carry a maximum punishment of 30 days in jail or a $1,000 fine.
Officials from Republic and Waste Management brought the case to the attention of police after noticing the containers were missing.
