The Continuum Recycling joint venture between Coca-Cola Enterprises and Eco Plastics now processes half of all PET bottles recycled in the U.K. The Hemswell, England plant has processed over 500 million bottles since opening in May 2012.
The U.K. Packaging and Films Association is calling a proposal to tax plastic bags "seriously disappointing." PAFA says that plastic bags are a necessary part of commerce activity in the U.K. and that plastic bags with high recycled content have the lowest footprint versus other alternatives.
Six Australian hospitals have recycled 33,000 pounds of PVC scrap as part of an ongoing hospital plastics recycling trial. The used floor mats, fluid bags, tubing and oxygen masks have been recycled into industrial hoses and non-stick floor mats.
A proposal to ban plastic bags in Sacramento, California has passed out of committee unanimously and will now go before the full city council. A date for the city council vote has not been set. The ban would apply to plastic bags distributed at grocery stores and big box retailers. A 10-cent fee on paper bags is also included.
