The American Institute for Packaging and the Environment (AMERIPEN), an industry group seeking to increase the sustainability and recovery of packaging, has announced that it is making its Product Recovery Knowledge Map available at no charge to the public. European leaders aren't giving bioplastics fair treatment, according to the trade association European Bioplastics. The organization says subsidies granted to the biofuels industry are distorting the market for bioplastic feedstocks and driving up prices.
In other news from across the pond, European Union member states recycled 33.6 percent of all plastic packaging in 2011, beating the EU's target of 22.5 percent. An additional 33.2 percent of plastic packaging scrap was recovered for energy. All countries met the EU minimum recycling target, except Malta and Cyprus.
