The American Chemistry Council's Plastics Division is accepting nominations for the annual Innovation in Plastics Recycling Awards. The awards recognize companies and individuals moving plastics recycling forward with new ideas, products and technologies. Nominations are due by Oct. 30. For more information, click here [1].

The Riyadh, Saudi Arabia-based King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology has filed Patent Application No. 20120258298, which describes a method of creating plastic insulation from mixed PET, PS and HDPE materials.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory of Washington, D.C. has developed [2] a new type of bacteria that uses photosynthesis to process carbon dioxide from the air into ethylene that can be used in plastics production. The organism, named Synechocystis, can produce 170 milligrams of ethylene per liter per day.

Levi's has announced a new line [3] of jeans made from 20 percent recycled PET. Each pair contains the equivalent of approximately a dozen plastic bottles, and the new line of jeans will go on sale early next spring.
