NewsBitsBy Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling Officials for New Hampshire's largest city, Manchester, are looking at ways to stop scavenging recyclable materials from curbside bins. According to a story [1] from The Union-Leader, an ordinance was drafted at the request of the city's hauler, Pinard Waste. Violators could be fined, but not jailed, under the ordinance. "Boxes, Bottles and Banana Peels [2]," a video guide to school recycling, has won a 2011 Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Award. The video — which was initiated and funded by Saint Paul-Ramsey County (Minnesota) Public Health, Produced by the City of Roseville and filmed and edited by CTV North Suburbs — offers a step-by-step guide for schools seeking to establish or improve their recycling programs. The days following Halloween can produce a scary amount of candy wrappers as the take from the holiday is consumed. But instead of throwing away the wrappers, TerraCycle has found a way to recycle them [3]. 7-Eleven licensee Handee Marts, Inc. has deemed the PepsiCo. Dream Machine recycling kiosk initiative a success [4] in all of its stores. The company's 63 7-Eleven stores in Pennsylvania have collected a total 121,400 beverage containers since starting the program. California Governor Jerry Brown has appointed Caroll Mortensen [5] to serve as the director of the Department of Resource Recovery and Recycling (CalRecycle). For the last decade, Mortensen served as one of the California Legislature's Senior Environmental Policy Consultants. Her appointment was applauded by environmental group Californians Against Waste. |
