Refurb guidelines up for comment
By Jake Thomas, Resource Recycling
Draft guidelines for the computing equipment refurbishment have been released and a public comment period on the document is now open.
"Guideline on Environmentally Sound Testing, Refurbishment & Repair of Used Computing Equipment " seeks to establish a framework to better incorporate reuse and refurbishment into emerging international environmental standards. The document covers how refurbishment and repair facilities can make their operations more environmentally sound and also includes guidance on labeling/documentation, packaging and storage of refurbished and repaired equipment. It also includes recommendations for marketing, donation and redeployment of refurbished and repaired equipment.
The document has been developed by the United Nations Environment Program, the Basel Convention and the Partnership for Action on Computer Equipment.
